1. Discolored Filter- One of the easy ways to find out filter needs changing is by actually looking at it. A fresh and clean filter will likely be white; it gets darker as it gathers dust and dirt. So, if your filter looks dark and dirty, then it is best to get it checked by a technician and get it changed.  

2. Check Engine Light- Most vehicles these days have a ‘check engine’ light appearing on their dashboard from time to time. This light can have many meanings, one of which can be the filter issue. It is recommended that you do not ignore the light and get it checked by a mechanic right away.   

3. Engine Noises- You might hear different noises coming from your car, and you don’t have to worry about every one of them. However, if you notice spitting or popping sounds when your engine is idle, it can indicate that your filter needs to change.   

4. Smoke from the Exhaust- A dark smoke coming from the car’s exhaust can never be a good sign. This commonly means that your air filter needs replacement. The reason behind this situation is that the engine does not have the right air-fuel balance; therefore, excess fuel flows out of the exhaust in the form of black smoke.  

5. A decline in Performance- People who drive regularly are aware of how it feels to drive, so if you see any sudden changes, like slow performance while driving uphill or if your car is struggling to reach high speeds, there is a possibility that your air filter is to be blamed.
